La Educación en línea, ¿es de Calidad?

La calidad de la educación siempre ha sido un tema de debate; sin embargo, cuando se habla de educación en línea, la calidad es aún más cuestionada.  Primero definiremos qué es la educación en línea.  De acuerdo con la Universidad Utel, “ Entendemos por educación en línea al proceso de aprendizaje entre profesores y alumnos en un entorno totalmente digital en dónde la tecnología y las técnicas de aprendizaje conforman el modelo educativo, para lograr así un ambiente altamente interactivo, a cualquier hora y desde cualquier lugar en el que te encuentres”.  La educación en línea es una evolución de la educación a distancia, la cual tiene muchos años y se originó gracias a la necesidad de educar y capacitar a personas que, por diversas razones, no podían acudir a escuelas físicas en horarios y días determinados.  Ésta sigue siendo la premisa principal  por la que las personas seleccionan la modalidad a distancia en formato en línea.  La modalidad en línea  es  más acorde a la época, ya que, anteriormente, se usó la correspondencia, la radio y la televisión.  En  los formatos como de radio y televisión, hay varios ejemplos importantes.  Por ejemplo, la telesecundaria* de México, un programa de educación media que ha usado el gobierno federal por 51 años para educar a los jóvenes en comunidades rurales del país.

La educación en línea tiene grandes retos, pero mi parecer el principal es el tema de la deserción, pues se habla que alrededor del 60% de los alumnos que ingresan a los programas de educación de nivel superior, como la licenciatura, abandonan sus programas durante los primeros cursos.  Esto se da por diversas razones, pero una de la más importante es que este tipo de educación exige compromisos de autoestudio que muchas veces representan un reto difícil de lograr de forma autónoma. 

Pero, ¿qué hay de la calidad en la educación? Si bien todavía existe un gran estigma acerca de los programas en línea sugiriendo que son de baja calidad, la realidad es que eso es cada día menos cierto.  Hay organismos internacionales como Quality Matters, el Online Learning Consortium (OLC), el  Instituto Latinoamericano y del Caribe de Calidad en Educación Superior a Distancia (CALED) o la International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE), que vigilan y proponen estándares internacionales académicos de programas e instituciones para asegurar que los contenidos y la experiencia general que se ofrecen en línea sean de alta calidad.  Estos organismos se encargan también de evaluar los sistemas con los que operan dichos programas.

La principal recomendación es que si estás buscando estudiar algún programa a distancia, en de formación continua o  de actualización (cursos, diplomados, etc); o bien, programas oficiales como licenciatura o algún posgrado, te asegures que algún organismo lo avale para confirmar que los conocimientos o habilidades que adquieras tengan una revisión previa y lo respalde una calidad certificada.

IT'S NOT THE BOOK, IT'S YOU!

Last week a school director called me up to tell me that the book they chose last summer was not working for them.

I am a consultant for an editorial company in Mexico and I had sold them the series. I have also been head of a school for 10 years and an English teacher for 15 prior to that, and the minute those words came out of his mouth, I knew what he was going to ask. He wanted me to give the teachers a workshop, on how to make those books work for them. We agreed to meet the following week, as by chance I was traveling to his particular city.

I got those books out, and sat with them for 20 minutes, looked through them with my teacher questions in my head. If I were a teacher again, what would I do with this series to make it work for the teachers? That is when it dawned on me! It is not about how to make the book work for the teachers, it’s about what the teachers can do to make the book work for their students.

Any book, or workbook that we choose for our school has the capability of being the best book in the world, but it is not the responsibility of the book to be great! It is the responsibility of the teacher to make it great!

Why? Because it is the responsibility of the teacher to make everything that their students do in their classroom, if not fun all the time, at least a gratifying learning experience.

So, with this new perspective in mind, after reviewing the books, I thought of dozens and dozens of ideas that would make those books a great learning experience for the kids. I almost wanted to go straight into the classroom and start working to show their teacher how truly great those books were and what the potential of those books could be, IF and only IF they were willing to put in the 20 minutes needed to do the planning and properly prepare a good lesson.

All you need is a good attitude, a positive outlook and the drive to become the best teacher you can be for those young children who will remember you for the rest of their life.

Needless to say, they got the message and suddenly, what was once a dull workbook, became the means to motivate a group of teachers that thought that the book was the one that had to do the work.
